Mantu Kitchen
Brand Identity | Cultural Storytelling

Overview

Mantu Kitchen is a small business that celebrates the tradition of Afghan cooking through food, hospitality, and community. Developed through NewPublica as part of the Elevate Hennepin program, the project focused on creating a visual identity that would help the business establish a memorable and authentic brand as it prepared to grow.

I developed a complete visual identity inspired by the cultural significance of mantu, a handmade dumpling often prepared for family gatherings and celebrations. Drawing from Afghan craft traditions and the restaurant's story, I created a brand system that feels warm, welcoming, and rooted in heritage while remaining approachable for a broad Minnesota audience.

Process

Designing with Cultural Intention

Creating this identity required balancing authenticity with accessibility. Rather than borrowing decorative elements at face value, I researched Afghan textiles, traditional craftsmanship, and the cultural significance of mantu to better understand the story the brand wanted to tell.

Every visual decision was made with intention, ensuring the identity honored Afghan heritage while creating an inviting experience for people who may be discovering the cuisine for the first time.

A System Built Around Hospitality

The visual identity extends beyond the logo through typography, pattern, and color, creating a consistent experience that reflects the warmth and generosity central to Afghan hospitality. Together, these elements create a brand that feels handcrafted, welcoming, and timeless.
