Culturica (2025)

Culturica is a youth-driven magazine created through a collaboration between NewPrensa, the University of Minnesota's Chicano Latino Studies department, White Bear Lake School's Latinos Unidos, and El Colegio High School. The project is part of a leadership program that supports Latine/x students as they develop their voices through storytelling and journalism.

My role was to design a visual system that elevated their work with clarity and confidence. I used bold typography, flexible layouts, and custom illustrations to reflect the tone, cultural details, and emotional depth of each piece. The design works as an amplifier, helping each contributor's perspective stand out while maintaining a cohesive editorial identity.

Process Work

My process involved reading each story closely, analyzing its themes, and gathering notes based directly from the student contributors. I asked about the images, symbols, and emotions they wanted readers to understand. These insights guided the direction. By grounding the design in the students' own intentions, the magazine became a unified and energetic publication that represents the voices with honesty and impact.
